For Rice University’s Kinder Institute, Cut To Create is producing Paths [Senderos], a deeply personal and educational video series centered around grief, loss, and emotional resilience for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
The goal of the series is to create an accessible, compassionate resource that helps individuals better understand grief, process complex emotions, and feel less alone in their experiences.
The series combines intimate interviews, guided educational content, and cinematic verité storytelling to explore the many ways grief can impact someone’s life.
Across the project, participants share personal stories about losing loved ones, coping with change, navigating difficult emotions, and finding meaningful ways to remember and honor the people they’ve lost.
Rather than approaching the subject clinically, we wanted the films to feel warm, human, honest, and empowering.
Visually, the project leans heavily into environmental storytelling and authentic moments.
We captured participants in the spaces most meaningful to them; at home, in gardens, coffee shops, nurseries, and everyday environments connected to memory and comfort.
Through thoughtful cinematography, carefully designed support footage, and gentle pacing, the series creates space for reflection while remaining approachable and emotionally grounded.
In addition to the personal storytelling elements, the videos incorporate educational guidance, discussion prompts, accessible language, and supportive tools designed specifically for audiences with IDD.
The result is a series that feels both emotionally impactful and genuinely useful, helping open conversations around grief that are too often overlooked.
