This video tells the incredible story of Holocaust Museum Houston’s Danish rescue boat exhibit, how it was restored and came to be at the museum, and the important role it played in saving many Danish Jews during the Holocaust through one man’s personal account of his own childhood rescue.
We incorporated pre-recorded interview footage with the survivor into interview footage with HMH representatives as well as archival footage to build out this story, which was featured during multiple HMH fundraising events.
When Holocaust Museum Houston was given the opportunity to exhibit an authentic Holocaust-era railcar, this provided an excellent opportunity to document the process of establishing the exhibit as well as the impact it has had on museum-goers. This video was showcased at a live fundraising event and also plays at the museum.

Our strategy for this project was not just to relay the process of the railcar’s installation, but also give the viewer the same impactful feel of being physically inside of the railcar. Pre-production on this project included deep background research and licensing of archival footage and gathering imagery from HMH’s representatives of the railcar’s transport from Germany to the US.
Over the course of a half-day, we conducted interviews with 5 representatives who were instrumental in obtaining the railcar for HMH, and we filmed b roll at the museum of the railcar and people interacting with the railcar.
Info about who we interviewed, content we found in archives, and filming the physical railcar.
In the edit, we chose to open with a powerful sequence of archival footage intended to put the viewer in the shoes of someone forced onto a railcar during the Holocaust. The transportation of the railcar was a huge undertaking and we also wanted to show the herculean effort required to make it happen. To finish the piece, sound and music emphasize the emotional impact of the story.
The Engines of Change program is making a real difference in combating hate, intolerance and apathy among our community’s future leaders. We’re proud to help amplify their message and provide support to this amazing program.
Before filming, it was necessary to identify students who could provide us with engaging interviews through pre-interviews.
This project was filmed in the classroom, and we also followed the students as they took a tour of East Downtown, to capture the hands-on present-day relevance of the program and its impact on students.
Our goals in editing were to encourage more students to participate in the program, but also to encourage potential donors to see the value of the program and invest in its success.
